We leave Nairobi early this morning and drive through Moshi and on to Marangu through coffee and banana plantations to the higher slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.
Overnight at Capricorn Hotel

After breakfast, we drive to the Marangu Gate and begin a pleasant and undemanding trek up through the forest, following a broad path through the mountain rain forest, to the Mandara Hut. The walk covers some 8kms over 3-4 hours. If you have the energy we can take a short walk up to Maundi crater which is close by.
Overnight at Mandara Hut (2,750m)

Our walk today will take 5-7 hrs (15kms). After leaving the rain forest we climb through the magnificent majestic tree-like heathers before emerging on the grasslands near the volcanic cone of " Kimangi Marangu" little Chief - once an important rain-making site. We get our first views of the sprawling plains below.
Overnight at Horombo Hut (3,720m)

We spend a relaxing day on the mountain acclimatizing to the high altitude allowing some time to explore the surrounding area.
Overnight at Horombo Hut (3,720m)

We leave the high trunk vegetation behind us and cross the barren sub alpine terrain of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks covering 13kms over 6-7 hours.
Overnight at Kibo Hut (4,703m)

Our spectacular day to the summit starts early at 1 am. We follow our guide lantern along the zigzag path up the scoriae, stopping frequently to enjoy the starlit night. We arrive at the rocks of Gillman's Point on the edge of the crater at first light to see the sun rise behind Mawenzi illuminating the plains beneath. A further gentle climb leads us to the spectacular Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - summit of Africa! We return to the Horombo Hut for the night.
Overnight at Horombo Hut

A much easier day as we have the luxury of walking down hill to our vehicle that is waiting at the Marangu Gate to transfer us back to the Capricorn Hotel.
Overnight at the Capricorn hotel

After an early breakfast, we head back to Nairobi.
